The South African motor insurance industry continues to operate within a more complex and evolving risk environment. Increasing levels of vehicle-related crime, including cloning, accident staging, and organised fraud, are exerting ongoing pressure on insurers and emphasising the need for stronger preventative measures.
In this context, collaboration, data sharing, and early validation have become vital elements of effective risk management.
SAIA is pleased to publish the Vehicle Salvage Database (VSD) Annual Usage and Value Report for 2025, illustrating how member insurers are utilising this vital industry resource to improve operational efficiency and safeguard against emerging threats.
The report shows that SAIA Motor Insurance Members are actively using the VSD to enhance claims integrity, support more informed underwriting decisions, and lessen exposure to motor-related risks. The findings confirm that, when applied consistently, the VSD provides measurable value and helps achieve better risk outcomes across the industry.
Importantly, the VSD has developed beyond its role as a mere database. It now functions as a collective industry safeguard—ensuring the correct settlement of valid claims while allowing earlier detection and prevention of fraudulent activity.
SAIA recognises and commends members who continue to utilise the VSD effectively. This ongoing dedication is vital in safeguarding the integrity of the insurance industry and the interests of policyholders.
Members requiring extra support or guidance are encouraged to contact SAIA or the Insurance Crime Bureau (ICB). Broader and more consistent adoption of the VSD across both claims and underwriting processes remains essential to maximise its effectiveness.
