Retiree Repositioning Programme (RRP): Preserving Expertise and Strengthening the Future of the Non-Life Insurance Industry

The non-life insurance sector is home to a wealth of distinguished professionals who are approaching retirement or have recently retired. Without deliberate intervention, their invaluable institutional knowledge, technical expertise and industry insight risk being lost. The Retiree Repositioning Programme (RRP) seeks to preserve and harness this expertise by creating structured opportunities for retired and near-retired professionals to mentor junior and mid-level managers who aspire to advance their careers.

The South African Insurance Association (SAIA) advocates and lobbies on behalf of the industry to promote its sustainability, growth and meaningful transformation. The RRP directly supports these objectives, particularly within specialised lines of insurance where scarce and critical technical skills are essential to the industry’s long-term resilience and competitiveness.

Unlike traditional mentorship initiatives, the RRP places strong emphasis on the transfer of technical expertise and practical industry knowledge. This focused approach is vital to sustaining a highly skilled workforce. The programme is formally structured and managed by a dedicated Programme Manager who oversees mentor–mentee alignment, monitors progress and ensures accountability. Individual development objectives are clearly defined at the outset, with measurable SMART goals established and tracked throughout the programme cycle.

Mentoring, within the RRP context, is the intentional engagement of experienced professionals to guide and support mentees’ career development. The mentor’s role extends beyond providing technical advice. It encompasses two primary dimensions:

  • Career development support: coaching, providing stretch assignments, facilitating exposure and fostering professional visibility.
  • Psychosocial support: offering encouragement, counselling, role modelling and a safe space for reflection and growth.

Equally, mentees are expected to take ownership of their development. They must approach the programme with openness, accountability and a willingness to view feedback as a constructive tool for continuous improvement.

The RRP is fully funded by INSETA, which has recognised the programme’s strategic value to the industry and committed funding for three cycles. The pilot cycle ran from 1 December 2022 to 30 November 2023, culminating in a graduation ceremony on 5 December 2023. The pilot cohort consisted of five mentors and fifteen mentees, providing an opportunity to test and refine the model. The second intake ran from 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025, building on the success and lessons of the pilot.

Benefits to mentees include:

  • Enhanced personal and career development
  • Accelerated growth through access to seasoned industry expertise
  • Strengthened leadership and management capabilities
  • Broader professional perspective and confidence

Benefits to supporting organisations include:

  • Reinforcement of existing training and skills development initiatives
  • Increased productivity and improved performance
  • Strengthened succession planning and structured skills transfer
  • Enhanced job satisfaction and employee engagement
  • Acceleration of employment equity objectives
  • Improved organisational competence and capability
  • Optimal utilisation of employee talent and potential

In conclusion, the RRP represents a strategic intervention to safeguard the intellectual capital of the non-life insurance sector while cultivating the next generation of industry leaders. By intentionally connecting experience with emerging talent, the programme strengthens technical capability, advances transformation and ensures the continued sustainability and competitiveness of the industry.
