SAIA Members Driving Small Business Resilience Through Education

The South African Insurance Association (SAIA), with the support of its members, has successfully delivered the 21st edition of its consumer education initiatives, reinforcing the insurance industry’s collective commitment to financial inclusion and small business resilience.

Through the SAIA Consumer Education Fund, funded by members, SAIA continues to advance programmes that strengthen understanding of non-life insurance, promote effective risk management, and build confidence among consumers and small business owners when engaging with insurers.

While South Africa has over three million small businesses employing 13.5 million people and generating roughly R5 trillion in turnover, only 18% are insured, according to the FinMark Trust FinScope MSME Survey (2024). This gap highlights the need for member-supported education initiatives that boost insurance awareness and uptake.

Building Resilient Businesses Programme

SAIA’s flagship Building Resilient Businesses (BRB) programme equips micro and small enterprises with financial literacy and practical risk management tools. In 2025, the programme reached 770 SMMEs across eight provinces, including rural communities, through in-person, two-day workshops.

Feedback from participants highlighted the relevance and practicality of the training, with increased confidence reported in financial decision-making and risk management. Notably, all participants expressed interest in follow-up engagements, demonstrating the programme’s sustained value. A session in KwaZulu-Natal, which included local traditional leaders, further reflected the programme’s reach and inclusivity.

From Education to Enterprise Growth

The BRB programme extends beyond training by creating pathways for growth. Through partnerships with service providers, SAIA members help with mentorship, skills development, and access to business opportunities. This has already resulted in tangible outcomes, such as a restaurant in the Northwest Province securing a mining catering contract and a 100% Black woman-owned biotechnology laboratory receiving accreditation support and mentorship, which enabled successful entry into the retail market.

Extending Reach Through Radio

In addition to workshops, SAIA provides insurance education through radio to expand its reach. Hosted by an industry expert on Gagasi FM in isiZulu, the programme reaches about 1.46 million listeners across KwaZulu-Natal. In 2025, topics covered  included e-hailing and taxi insurance, commercial insurance cover, SASRIA protection, and liability risks.

“Through member support, SAIA is empowering small businesses with the knowledge and tools to manage risk more effectively,” said Zanele Gigaba, SAIA Transformation Manager. “Together, we are making insurance literacy accessible and meaningful for entrepreneurs across the country.”
