Safe Solar, Secure Homes: National Solar PV Safety Campaign Launched

The South African Insurance Association (SAIA), together with municipalities, industry bodies, insurers, financial institutions, fire protection organisations and civil society, has launched the Safe Solar PV & Storage Campaign, a national initiative promoting safe, compliant and insurable residential solar installations. The national awareness drive supports both new and existing residential solar PV customers to ensure their systems are safe, legally registered, compliant with standards and insurable.
As household solar adoption continues to grow in response to energy security and sustainability needs, the campaign provides clear, practical guidance to homeowners with solar PV and battery storage systems typically below 30 kWp.
Launching in January 2026, the campaign raises awareness of the risks associated with unsafe or non-compliant installations, including fire hazards, property damage and insurance implications. Homeowners are reminded that compliance is compulsory and remains the responsibility of the system owner under South Africa’s Electrical Installation Regulations.
“The rapid increase in residential solar installations makes safety and compliance essential,” said Pamela Ramagaga, SAIA General Manager: Insurance Risks. “Non-compliance not only poses safety risks but can also have serious insurance consequences.”
The campaign is supported by downloadable checklists and educational resources, which will be shared through partner platforms, including insurers, banks, municipalities and community networks. A mix of traditional media, digital channels and social media will be used to reinforce key messages and encourage informed, responsible solar adoption.
